Everyday Islam in Kumasi: Devout Lay Men and Women in Daily Life

by Gracia Clark

Twi

Asante Twi is one of the major dialects of Akan, a language spoken widely in Southern Ghana and adjacent partts of Cote d'Ivoire. About two-thirds of Ghana's population speak an Akan language as their mother tongue, including Fante, Akuapim, Akyim, Brong and Sehwi. Because of this majority, speakers of other local languages often learn Twi as a second or third language. In areas like Kumasi, where Twi is the dominant local language, it is used in public primary schools for the first three years, while pupils are learning English.
